{Radio} Living and Having Babies at the age of 24,000

It has to be a mistype or mistake, but it’s not. Russian scientists recently discovered 24,000 year old frozen organisms that when thawed are capable of reproducing.

This microscopic rotifer worm, called an evolutionary scandal by the biologists, is female, does not require a male to reproduce and was alive and crawling under the feet of the dinosaurs.

This discovery provides so many future possibilities, the greatest of which are the question it raises of how its stayed alive, is able to be easily reanimated and readily reproduce, can we freeze and reanimate multi-cellular tissues, how did it survive for so long without oxygen and water all of which we can’t yet answer.

Lyubov Shmakova – The rotifer was able to feed after being thawed from the ice.

Radio Hong Kong 3’s Phil Whelan start our regular weekly on air chat exploring this as well as current research around ageing and longevity, including a recent paper from a Singapore based research team that has identified ageing as a separate condition to all other ailments and has made the claim that the organic human body can theoretically live to 150.

They claim what prevents it from doing so, is not only the diseases we suffer, Cancer, Alzheimer’s etc, but that as we age our bodies resilience diminishes from about 2 weeks recovery under 30 years of age, to more that 6 week at 70+. It is the lack or resilience plus the disease that we might need to treta in the future to ensure health and longevity.

We also chat about research out of Bar Ilan University that has explored the use of Protein STRT6 as part of an answer for longevity.

As always a great chat listen now (18 minutes 34 seconds)…
