{Article} What jobs will be in demand in the future?

part of an ongoing foresight future of work series in conjunction with Seek.com –

The future landscape of our working lives is expected to look very different from what we know now – and it won’t be long before the changes are here.

We asked two futurists to tell us about our ways of working and the professions that will be most in demand in the years to come.

Forfeit 9 to 5

Now, and more so in the future, we will take more of a portfolio view of our professional lives. Morris Misel, a futurist and business strategist, says having two or three part-time roles might be the norm. That’s not to say things will take a 9-to-5 route, or even a Monday-Friday routine. Rather, work will be integrated into the bigger picture of our way of life. “We can have a primary job that’s more office-related, then hang out in people’s backyards, or jump into Uber chores the next day, for example,” he says.

The other key difference is that the technology will continue to support routine tasks that can be programmed and performed by machines. But that’s far from scary — Misel says that means the job market will simply evolve, not be replaced by machines.

The service sector will grow

While self-checkouts and online shopping may suggest otherwise, Misel predicts that service jobs will be a high-growth industry.

“People increasingly value experiences over spending on material goods, and while some services can be automated, experiences ultimately come down to human interaction – a five-star meal is less memorable served on a self-driving cart , after all,” he says.

Our aging population is very different from the last generation of retirees. According to Misel, since this group represents a large part of the population, it will be responsible for many changes in the labor market.

“Baby boomers are less concerned than previous generations with leaving a legacy behind and watching their savings closely,” he says. “Instead, they like to travel, eat their meals and stay at home longer, which creates jobs.”

And rather than nursing homes, home care will become the preferred option, giving way to a booming market for senior concierges. This will include household chores up to home physiotherapy and the company explains Miselowski.

Agriculture and food

While less than a decade ago agriculture degrees had single-digit enrollments, Misel says advances in technology have relieved many common agricultural tasks and led to an increase in study in this field.

There are also emerging areas, such as AI, robotics and CRISPR (genetically modified cultivation methods) technology, that will allow people to manipulate food to suit our conditions, he says. Jellyfish and insect farming are two other up-and-coming food-based careers – both foods could join the staple diet as they are more sustainable than other commodities.

Adam Long, a futurist and “the ethical CEO,” saw these foods served. “I recently attended a dinner party, which served predicted ‘future foods’ from the year 2045,” he says. “On the menu, crispy fried crickets, jellyfish sashimi, wallaby tail, seaweed jelly.”

You’ll need to embrace the digital age to stay ahead

Careers that combine IT skills with another skill set, such as a doctor/data scientist or a lawyer/UX designer will be in high demand in the future, Long says.

“Gaining additional computer skills and integrating them into their current job will make people more employable than ever,” he says. “A doctor and a data scientist working as a team are naturally less efficient and less creative than a doctor who is also a data scientist, for example.”

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. Long says short courses are the way of the future, and online education means you can train alongside and keep up to date with the latest technology throughout your career.

Likewise, jobs involving technology will be in demand, such as becoming an AI empathy coach or drone swarm manager, 3D printing organs and body parts, or working towards alternative energy sources, says Long.

So if you are wondering how to take your career to the next level in the future, get ready to improve your skills throughout your career with short courses, find ways to turn a hobby into a business high school, adopt your interpersonal skills or explore a growing field. industry.
